MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE FILM FORMAT.
Though I got my start using a DSLR camera, a film photography class that utilized SLR cameras would open my eyes to a whole new world of creative storytelling. At first I was skeptical about using what I believed to be outdated technology in a world of DSLR and mirrorless cameras, however, I soon came to learn that there is much more to a piece of art than the equipment used.
I have come to not only appreciate, but be drawn toward the traditional 35mm film format, noting the time and effort that goes into capturing a snapshot in time. In a weird way, it makes the moment feel more real in my mind. No pixels, no screens, just a point of light exposing a thin sheet of film.
Film format photography has also forced me to be much more intentional with the pictures that I take. I have found myself meticulously adjusting settings to ensure my exposure is perfect, positioning myself in order to achieve the best framing and composition possible.
It is thanks to Professor Martin Lang and his photography course that I have been able to develop my skills further as a storyteller. I have even invested in a standard 8mm movie camera, dedicating my next cinematic project to his course by capturing a story entirely on film.
